A Tampa Bay Homeowner's Guide to Year-Round Landscape Maintenance

Cheryl Wethington Cheryl Wethington

As a Tampa Bay resident, you know there are many perks to living on this side of the country (not to mention this side of our Sunshine State). One of them? There really isn’t an off-season for enjoying your outdoor spaces.

A January evening is usually lovely for a dinner on the patio (given there isn’t a sporadic cold snap) with friends. May brings new growth everywhere. June turns everything green. And, most special of all, when the rest of the country is preparing for a cold snap in October and putting their gardens to bed for the winter, we get to keep ours happy, healthy, and thriving.

Like with anything, though, these benefits come with trade-offs. The biggest one, in our mind at least, is that there’s really no off-season for landscape maintenance, either.

Here in Tampa Bay, we don't exactly have the four traditional seasons. We have hot, not-so-hot, a little bit of cool sprinkled in, and the occasional whatever-comes-with-hurricane season.

But that doesn't necessarily mean our landscapes don't experience seasons.

Periods of heavy rainfall, drought, extreme heat, cooler temperatures, tropical weather, and changing daylight all affect what's happening outside your home and in your garden.

Plants respond, growth rates change, your irrigation needs tweaking, and of course, the pest and disease pressure ebbs and flows. So, even though we don’t experience the same seasons as other areas of the country, Florida landscapes never really stand still.

That's exactly why year-round landscape maintenance matters.

What's Inside This Tampa Bay Landscape Guide

Why Do Tampa Bay Landscapes (Like Yours) Need Year-Round Maintenance?

Often, we get this question (or versions of it) asked is if Florida doesn't really experience major seasonal changes, does a landscape really need year-round care?

Our answer is always a very confident yes.

Consider that a landscape (and its well-being) isn’t a static feature of your home. Outdoor features, landscapes, gardens, etc. – you name it, it’s a living system that needs consistent care and consideration.

Living systems are always changing. As plants grow in Florida (and they do rather quickly), insects and diseases can develop at the drop of a hat. Your irrigation requirements shift dramatically between our drier months and rainy season. Storms create unexpected (and often unwelcome) problems.

Even two properties a few miles (or even a few blocks) apart can behave dramatically differently.

A protected St. Pete garden farther inland doesn't necessarily experience the same conditions as a waterfront property exposed to coastal winds and salt spray. And even within the same property, a sunny pool deck, shaded front entry, and exposed side yard can have completely different needs.

That's why thoughtful Tampa Bay landscape maintenance should never look exactly the same month after month. A good maintenance program follows the lead of a landscape rather than forcing the landscape to follow a maintenance schedule.

What Should Year-Round Landscape Maintenance Include?

As we mentioned, there’s no single routine that every landscape or garden should be forced into – it’s always about taking cues from the specific landscape itself and recognizing what it needs.

There are, of course, recurring tasks that keep any property looking polished and healthy.

Again, depending on the landscape, professional residential landscape care could include services and help like:

  • Lawn mowing and edging
  • Blowing and general cleanup
  • Shrub and hedge maintenance
  • Weed management
  • Bed edging and maintenance
  • Mulch care
  • Monitoring irrigation
  • Seasonal cleanup
  • Monitoring turf and plant health
  • Identifying pest or disease concerns
  • Adjusting maintenance based on seasonal growth
  • Making proactive recommendations when something needs attention

But our hot take is always that the list (thorough as it is) shouldn't be the only thing guiding the work.

A trained horticultural professional should also be looking at the property and ask important questions like:

  • What's changing?
  • What looks or is acting stressed?
  • What's growing faster than expected?
  • Is an area receiving too much water? Not enough water?
  • Is something showing early signs of pest or disease pressure?

Preventing a problem is almost always better than fixing a problem, which is why our gardeners intentionally inspect the properties they care for rather than simply arriving, checking off tasks on a list, and then leaving.

The Florida Dry Season: When Water Becomes the Priority

If you've lived in Tampa Bay for any length of time, you know our seasons tend to have a lot more to do with water than sweaters, pumpkin spice lattes, and changing leaves.

Our cooler months are also part of our drier season.

As a result, a landscape that receives plenty of help from summer thunderstorms can suddenly become much more dependent on its irrigation system. And as you know, irrigation in this part of Florida is never something you can set once and then forget about – it requires consistent attention, adjustment, and care.

Many local properties rely on reclaimed water, rainfall fluctuates throughout the year, and different areas of the same landscape may have very different needs. Coverage, timing, and what your plants are telling you all matter.

Though it might be a quieter growing period, it’s also a great opportunity to look at your landscape as a whole and evaluate what it needs and where it’s struggling.

  • Which plants are thriving? Which aren't?
  • Did certain areas struggle through the rainy season?
  • Have shrubs started crowding their neighbors?
  • Are there plants that need thoughtful pruning before the hottest weather kicks back in?

We believe that the best seasonal yard maintenance keeps an eye on what’s projected next for that space while managing what’s happening presently.

Preparing for a Hot & Humid Tampa Bay Summer

As we round the corner into summer, a familiar pattern begins to happen – the temperatures begin climbing higher, growth picks up faster, and we all wait for those summer afternoon showers to start.

This transition can put additional stress on turf and landscape plants, which makes monitoring irrigation and overall plant health especially important. It's also the time of year to start thinking about another reality that impacts more than just landscaping in our neck of the woods – hurricane season.

We firmly believe that storm preparation is a year-round focus that focuses on plants being resilient and healthy before storm season. (In other words, not just a haphazard prep list when a cone is pointed at Pinellas).

To us, that means maintaining trees and shrubs, watching for declining plant material, noticing drainage concerns, and addressing potential problems before severe weather puts additional stress on the property.

The Florida Rainy Season: When Everything Starts Growing

When the rain arrives, so does the heat, humidity, fast-growing turf, rapidly filling shrub beds, and pest and disease pressure.

For Tampa Bay lawn care, this time of year is often a whirlwind because there’s so much to focus on in a relatively short period of time.

The major summer problems aren’t always just about getting enough water into the landscape; to most homeowners’ surprise, it’s also about getting enough of the water out.

Once afternoon storms begin and find their rhythm, drainage and oversaturated areas can become just as important to monitor as heat and drought stress.

The biggest misconception is that more water always means happier plants and gardens.

If you’re dealing with soggy areas of your lawn after the rest has dried, a previously healthy bed starting to struggle, and the irrigation still running as you did in the Spring, that should be a clue you have a water problem.

An experienced fine gardening and landscape maintenance team should notice them.

Storms, Salt & Other St. Pete Area Landscape Challenges

Of course, year-round landscape maintenance in St. Pete and Tampa Bay comes with a few considerations that homeowners farther inland don't always have to think about. In other words, just because this area is part of Florida doesn’t mean it has all the other typical Florida problems – it has a lot of its own special challenges and benefits.

For waterfront and low-lying properties in particular, tropical weather can introduce more than wind and rain. Storm surge and brackish flooding may leave salt behind in the landscape, where it can continue stressing sensitive plants and turf even after the water itself has disappeared.

Coastal exposure can influence plant performance throughout the year as well. Sometimes a plant isn't struggling because it's being poorly maintained; it’s just not thriving in a particular spot for a long list of possible reasons.

In those circumstances, thorough horticultural knowledge becomes just as important as maintenance itself. Knowing what you're looking at (and even more importantly, why it's happening) helps us make better decisions for the long-term health of the landscape instead of continually treating symptoms.

Consistency Beats Occasional Landscape Cleanups

A beautiful landscape needs to be maintained consistently to remain beautiful. It sounds simple, but it’s one of the things we wish more Tampa Bay homeowners understood.

The landscapes that consistently look beautiful usually aren't getting dramatic makeovers every few months or big revamps, but what they are getting is consistent attention for all the small things that could start to leech away the beauty and function.

The lawn is cared for before it looks overgrown, the irrigation issues are tackled before they present bigger problems, pests are spotted before they spread, and drainage never has a chance to cause a soggy flood.

Occasional cleanups tend to put you in a cycle of continually trying to bring the property back from damage or deterioration – but a commitment to year-round maintenance keeps you from having to rescue your landscape over and over.

Over time, those hundreds of small, thoughtful efforts are what protect the investment you've made in your landscape and keep it looking beautiful consistently.

Is Year-Round Landscape Maintenance Worth the Investment?

We can’t exactly answer that for you, but for most Tampa Bay homeowners who value their outdoor spaces (and want to use them), we believe it absolutely is.

Year-round maintenance protects your landscape as the living, evolving investment that it is. It also gives you something that's a little harder to quantify – convenience. Most people don’t realize the time and energy it takes to keep a landscape or garden looking beautiful. When you dedicate all of your weekends to your lawn, you can start to resent it.

Having a go-to team you can trust (that knows how to tackle the care for your specific garden and landscape) gives you the ability to enjoy your garden without needing to take care of everything on the to-do list.

Is Professional Landscape Maintenance Better Than DIY?

It all depends on what you value and appreciate. First, let’s clear the air – we love people who love working in their gardens. We are those people.

But loving your landscape doesn't necessarily mean you want to be its full-time property manager. We know that our clients value and appreciate their outdoor spaces, but we also know that they have busy lives.

Sometimes, they simply want to sit outside and enjoy the landscape they've invested in rather than looking around and mentally cataloging what needs to be done next.

Professional landscape maintenance means there's a trained eye on your property on a regular, recurring basis.

At Salt & Soil Garden Co., our gardening team leads are FNGLA Certified Horticulture Professionals, bringing horticultural expertise to every property under their care.

They're not just checking boxes on a list; they’re looking, inspecting, and noticing every garden or landscape individually to prevent issues, protect investments, and figure out how to help that space thrive.

Year-Round Landscape Maintenance FAQs

Is year-round landscape maintenance really necessary in Florida?

If you ask us, the answer is always yes. Tampa Bay may not experience four traditional seasons like other parts of the country, but our landscapes still experience significant seasonal changes. Rainfall, drought, heat, cooler temperatures, tropical weather, plant growth, pest and disease pressure, flowering cycles, and irrigation needs all change throughout the year.

How often should my Tampa Bay landscape be maintained?

It depends on the property, plants, turf, time of year, and the goals you have for your space. Our long growing season generally requires consistent maintenance, but the work itself should adapt as conditions change. Thoughtful landscape maintenance should follow the needs of the property rather than forcing every month into exactly the same schedule.

What is the difference between lawn care and landscape maintenance?

Lawn care focuses primarily on maintaining your turf. Residential landscape care looks at the larger property, including turf, shrubs, beds, weeds, edges, cleanup, irrigation observations, plant health, and how all of those pieces work together.

Can I maintain my Florida landscape myself?

Of course you can. DIY landscape maintenance is always an option. Plenty of homeowners genuinely enjoy the process and like caring for their own space. Professional maintenance makes sense when you want the result without personally managing the recurring work. It also puts a trained horticultural professional on the property regularly who can identify changing conditions and potential problems early.

Is professional landscape maintenance worth the investment?

Only you can answer this question. We will say that, for homeowners who value a consistently beautiful property, convenience, horticultural expertise, proactive communication, and peace of mind, it truly is. Consistent care also helps protect the investment you've already made in your landscape by addressing issues before they become larger problems.
